The Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is
among the oldest, largest and most prestigious of the Institute's teaching
programmes. Ranked the best programme in the continent, and among the best in
the Asia-Pacific Region, the programme emphasizes innovative problem solving,
shared perspectives, applied management philosophy, and group work.
Post Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management
The Post Graduate Programme in Agri-Business
Management (PGP-ABM), equivalent to MBA, is a unique programme specially
designed to enhance the quality of management in the food and agribusiness
sector, and help this sector meet the challenges of the evolving market place.
Agriculture accounts for about 25 per cent of India's gross domestic product
(GDP) and for over 60 per cent of employment. The growth of this sector,
therefore, is crucial to the development of Indian economy. PGPX: One Year
Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives
The one year Post Graduate Programme in Management for
Executives (PGPX) is aimed at experienced executives who wish to acquire formal
training in management. It has a general management focus, with an emphasis on
managing across borders and cultures. It has an international immersion
component besides teaching content drawn from many countries. The goal is to
prepare participants to be ready to take leadership positions in the firms that
they join.
Fellow Programme in Management (FPM)
The Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) is the
doctoral programme of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. The
objective of the programme is to provide students with necessary skills to
identify and research complex issues in the field of management. FPM seeks
candidates with outstanding academic backgrounds, intellectual curiosity and
discipline needed to make scholarly contribution. IIMA’s doctoral
programme provides strong opportunities for inter-disciplinary education and
research. The small entering class ensures close interaction with the faculty,
where students can determine their own direction under the guidance of their
thesis advisory committee. The programme offers research training in ten areas
of specialization. The student becomes part of one of these sentinel groups and
acquires the fundamental theoretical knowledge and practical aspects of the
area. This allows close interaction with faculty members, which provides the
intellectual stimulation and helps develop the student’s own research interests
and professional goals. The programme is strongly committed to preparing
faculty who shape the managers of the future. Students generally take four to
five years to complete their doctoral studies including two years of rigorous
course work. Course work in the first year provides a general management
overview and develops basic skills for analysing managerial problems. In the
second year, students take advanced doctoral level courses in their areas of
specialization. The doctoral dissertation, for the next couple of years,
provides them with an opportunity to make original contribution to an area of
management or to one of its source disciplines. Our doctoral students find
challenging opportunities in India as well as abroad and a variety of research
and strategies. The FPM of IIMA is recognised as equivalent to Ph. D. in
management by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
Faculty Development Programme
The Faculty Development Programme (FDP) is specially
designed for teachers, researchers, and trainers in HRD, training colleges and
industrial organizations for their management education requirements. Since the
first course offered in 1979, the programme has been continuously modified and
re-structured to address new developmental needs of management educators. Every
year hundreds of sponsored participants enhance their skills and update their
pedagogical tools. They practice and share their new learning with thousands of
students, slowly bringing about a major qualitative change in academics and
practice. Participants are provided an opportunity to refresh their
knowledge related to management education and pedagogy with the latest academic
practices in the field. Many participants develop insights into curriculum
planning and academic administration. FDP provides participants a unique
opportunity for self-development with compulsory courses and specially designed
workshops. The compulsory courses are designed to enhance teaching and research
capabilities whereas exposure to elective courses aims at improving substantive
knowledge in specific functional areas of management
Management Development Programme
Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIMA), was
set up by the Government of India in 1961 in collaboration with the Government
of Gujarat and Indian Industry. IIMA’s mission is to contribute to the
enhancement of managerial talent and capability in the country. A set of
academic activities, which include (a) the Post-Graduate Programme in
Management (PGP), (b) the doctoral level Fellow Programme in Management (FPM),
(c) Management Development Programmes (MDPs), and (d) Faculty Development
Programme (FDP), was chosen as a conscious
strategy to achieve IIMA’s mission. It was a deliberate decision to
begin the academic activities at IIMA with a management development programme
now popularly know as the 3-Tier Programme (3-TP). Since then, IIMA has been
constantly adding to the list of MDPs and has been offering about 45 MDPs every
year to practising managers in India and neighbouring countries. In the
academic year June 2004 - May 2005, IIMA has planned 45 MDPs on a variety of
topics. This list includes some very unique MDPs like the 3-TP, the long
duration MEP, and an MDP for small business. These MDPs known as general
management MDPs, are designed with the objective of providing: (a) insights
into managerial concepts and techniques relevant for formulating and
implementing strategies in functional areas, and (b) an overall
perspective for decision making by integrating functional and general
management approaches. In the year 2003-04, IIMA offers several MDPs
focused on functional and sectoral areas such as communication, human resource
management, organizational behaviour, marketing, operations management,
strategy, information systems, agriculture, education, health, and
infrastructure. These programmes are designed to provide an update on knowledge
and experience base. IIMA has been very active in designing and offering
several MDPs on contemporary topics to bring the latest in management
discipline to practising managers. Some of the MDPs at IIMA are sponsored by
national and international agencies. At IIMA, it is a tradition to
constantly update the course content, revise the course design, and experiment
with innovative pedagogy. The 80 strong faculty at IIMA continuously attempt to
integrate research, teaching, and applied work. Pedagogical tools are
matched to the needs of individual MDPs and emphasize active and participative
learning rather then passive assimilation. The case method of study is the
major tool. It is supplemented by group exercises, role plays, computer games,
lecture-cum-discussions, and presentations by participants. Response of
industry and government to MDPs has been very encouraging. So far more than
36,500 managers from public and private sector organizations and government
departments have participated in more than 1000 MDPs.
